What Are the Different Types of Massages Offered in a Local Spa?

Choosing a massage spa in Tomas Morato, Quezon City, or Balanga, Bataan should not be about picking the strongest pressure or simply booking the most popular service. The right massage depends on what your body needs that day: rest, stress relief, stretching, focused work on tight muscles, or support for areas of discomfort.
At YUAN Spa, we group our services into two practical categories: relaxation massages and therapeutic-focused massages. Knowing the difference helps clients book with clearer expectations and get a better experience.
Relaxation Massages: For Rest, Stress Relief, and Overall Wellness
Relaxation massage is ideal if you want to de-stress, rest, sleep better, and feel lighter. These massage services are suitable for clients dealing with long workdays, travel fatigue, mental stress, or general body tiredness.
Swedish Massage: Best for Relaxation and Stress Relief

Swedish massage uses smooth, calming strokes with light to moderate pressure. It is one of the best massage options for first-time spa clients, people who want to relax, and those who prefer a gentler approach.
A common misconception is that Swedish massage should be deep pressure. Swedish massage is traditionally designed for relaxation. If you want stronger pressure, Combination Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, or Therapeutic Massage may be a better fit.
Combination Massage

Combination massage is a flexible option for clients who want both relaxation and firmer pressure. It blends techniques depending on the client’s preference, whether Shiatsu pressure points or Thai stretching techniques.
This is often a good choice for first-time clients who want more than a light Swedish massage but do not necessarily need a highly focused therapeutic session.
Traditional Thai Massage: Stretching and Mobility Support

Traditional Thai Massage combines controlled pressure with assisted stretching. It is a good choice for clients who feel stiff from sitting, driving, limited movement, or physically demanding work.
Thai Massage is commonly misunderstood as an oil massage. Traditional Thai Massage is usually performed without oil and emphasizes stretching, movement, and body positioning.
Hand, Foot, and Back Reflexology: For Tired Feet and Everyday Fatigue

Hand, Foot, and Back Reflexology is ideal for clients who spend long hours standing, walking, commuting, or working at a desk. It focuses on tired feet, hands, and back muscles while the client remains comfortably seated.
It is a practical choice when you want relief from everyday fatigue but do not need a full-body massage.
Therapeutic-Focused Massages: For Specific Areas of Tension and Discomfort
Therapeutic-focused massage differs because it is intended for clients with a more specific concern, such as lower back tightness, shoulder discomfort, stiffness, post-workout soreness, or muscle tension.
At YUAN Spa, clients commonly book therapeutic services for lower-back pain, sciatica-like discomfort, and shoulder pain. The approach should not be one-size-fits-all. A therapist needs to understand where the discomfort is, how intense it feels, when it started, what may have caused it, and what the client has already done to manage it.
Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic-focused massage is best for clients with a specific area of muscle tension or discomfort. At YUAN Spa, common concerns include lower-back tightness, sciatica-like discomfort, shoulder pain, stiffness, and post-workout soreness.
Before beginning a therapeutic massage, our therapists ask where the discomfort is located, the pain scale, when it started, possible causes, and what interventions the client has already tried. This helps guide the session safely and appropriately.
Therapeutic Massage: Customized for Your Area of Concern
Therapeutic Massage is not a fixed routine. It is adjusted based on the client’s concern, body condition, and pressure tolerance.
For example, a client with lower-back tightness from sitting or driving may receive more focused work on the lower back, hips, glutes, and surrounding muscles. A client with office-related shoulder tension may need more attention on the neck, shoulders, upper back, and shoulder blade area.
The purpose is to support comfort and reduce muscle tension. Massage does not diagnose, cure, or replace medical treatment.
Lymphatic Massage: Light Pressure and Wellness Support

Gentle Lymphatic Massage uses light, calming movements and is not a deep-pressure service. It is intended as a spa wellness service and is not medical lymphatic drainage or a treatment for swelling, disease, or post-surgical recovery.
Clients with unexplained swelling, recent surgery, cancer history, heart or kidney conditions, blood-clot concerns, infection, or doctor-directed restrictions should seek medical clearance before booking.
Why Harder Massage Is Not Always Better
One of the biggest myths in massage is that pain means the massage is working. It does not.
Some clients arrive expecting the strongest possible pressure, especially for tight shoulders or lower-back discomfort. But pressure that is too aggressive can make muscles guard, tighten further, or feel sore for longer than necessary.
A good massage should feel focused and relieving, not forced. The right pressure depends on the client’s tolerance, the area being worked on, the condition of the muscles, and the purpose of the session.
At YUAN Spa, clients are encouraged to speak up during the massage if the pressure feels too light, too strong, or uncomfortable. The massage should adapt to the client, not the other way around.
Safety First: When to Postpone a Massage
Massage is not appropriate in every situation. Clients should postpone their appointment or seek medical clearance first if they have a fever, flu-like symptoms, an active infection, open wounds, skin irritation, recent injury, swelling, or recent surgery.
For clients with sciatica-like pain that travels down the leg, therapists should be especially careful. Aggressive pressure directly on sensitive areas is avoided, while surrounding tension in the lower back, hips, and glutes may be addressed carefully. If pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by numbness or weakness, medical assessment should be the first step.
Prenatal massage is accepted from the second trimester onward and should use gentle techniques, safe positioning, and appropriate pressure. Clients with high-risk pregnancy, bleeding, unusual swelling, severe pain, or other medical concerns should obtain a doctor’s clearance before booking.
For postnatal clients, massage should only be considered when they feel physically stable and have no unusual bleeding, fever, dizziness, severe pain, infection, or complications. For clients who delivered through C-section, YUAN Spa takes a more conservative approach and recommends regular body massage only after one year, with no direct pressure applied to the abdomen, incision area, or scar.
What Makes a Professional Spa Experience Different?
A professional spa should not treat massage as a routine service that is identical for every client. At YUAN Spa, the experience begins with listening.
Before the session, clients are encouraged to share their goals, preferred pressure, areas of concern, pregnancy status, recent surgery, injuries, fever, and relevant medical conditions. Therapists then adjust the service based on the information provided.
YUAN Spa is a Technical Education and Skills Development Authority-accredited training institution, and its therapists are TESDA-certified. The spa is also accredited by the Department of Health and is a member of the World Massage Federation. Beyond formal standards, the team invests in continuing education, competitions, and conventions to keep improving its techniques and service quality.
Hygiene is equally important. Fresh sheets are used for every client, massage areas are maintained properly, and sanitation is treated as part of the service, not an afterthought.
How to Choose the Right Massage for You
Choose a relaxation massage if you want to de-stress, rest, sleep better, and feel lighter overall. Swedish, Combination, Shiatsu, Thai, and Hand, Foot, and Back Reflexology are strong options depending on your preferred pressure and style.
Choose a therapeutic-focused massage if you have specific muscle tension or discomfort, such as tight shoulders, lower back stiffness, post-workout soreness, or body pain that needs more targeted attention. Therapeutic or Lymphatic Massage may be appropriate depending on your concern and health condition.
The best massage is not necessarily the longest, deepest, or most expensive one. It is the massage that matches your body’s needs, is delivered safely, and leaves you feeling genuinely better.
